Our Initiatives
We focus on restoring degraded landscapes and empowering local communities through sustainable agroforestry.

Tree Planting and Single Tree Monitoring
Together with farmers,
we plant timber trees and other intercrops using an agroforestry system. The types of plants selected are adjusted to soil characteristics, market potential, and farmer preferences.
We work closely with local farmers, weaving together tree planting and intercropping to create a thriving biodiversity and healthy soil. Our holistic approach spans the entire value chain to ensure our solutions benefit everyone involved. We empower farmers by providing them with:
– A diverse selection of seedlings: Timber trees, fruit trees, and vegetables – a variety that enriches both the land and livelihoods.
– Comprehensive training: Equipping farmers with the skills to adopt sustainable practices and unlock the full potential of their land.
– Transparency and responsibility: The planted trees are monitored using an app called TREEO to ensure the growth and carbon absorption data are accurate.
This agroforestry system boosts incomes for farmers and communities by creating a continuous flow of harvests. With a mix of crops that mature at different times, there’s always something to reap, ensuring a steady stream of income.

Light Wood Product Research and Development
In addition to planting trees, we also conduct research that occurs with academic institutions and the business world to develop engineered wood products from fast-growing local species, to support local economies and forest restoration.
Cocoa Cultivation & Strengthening of the Cocoa Value Chain
Through good cocoa cultivation training and the development of a sustainable cocoa value chain supported by the local government, we support the improvement of farmers’ welfare through marketing and increasing the selling value of high-quality fermented cocoa beans to premium buyers both nationally and internationally.

Patchouli and Essential Oil Production
With the high market potential of Patchouli oil, we cultivate patchouli and develop sustainable and quality patchouli essential oil production to provide alternative income for the local community.
Environmental Education Program for the Young Generation
Together with local partner Borneo Institute (BiT), we also educate the young generation to conserve forests through cultural approaches and interactive activities.

Supporting the Establishment of a Wildlife Corridor in the Katingan-Kahayan Landscape
GFI is actively working with NGOs and local governments to support the establishment of the Katingan Corridor, which connects Sebangau National Park and Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park—two important ecosystems in Central Kalimantan.
